Still My Best Friend
"Together forever, never apart. Maybe in distance, but never in heart.” - Unknown
Most of us have a best friend. Whether its human or animal, we have someone to confide in. That someone, my someone, walked into my life 6 years ago.
Rob and I met in the 8th grade, in English class. It was my second year that I had been in Kentucky, and for him, it was his first. He was the new guy that had no idea where to sit. Even to this day, I don't know why he chose to sit by me, but he did. The first words out of his mouth, "Hey, I'm gonna eat you." Charming, I know.
We have spent the last 6 years being friends. We started off hanging out more and more during school. Then we were talking on Myspace almost every night and eventually, texting all the time. We would talk about absolutely everything. He was there for me through bad relationships and family drama. I returned the favor by being there for him through his step-dads deployment, family drama, and of course relationship drama. We always talked whenever about whatever.
In the beginning of September, of 2009, I started dating a guy that he didn't like at all. Actually, a lot of people didn't. Rob said one little thing about the new boyfriend, and for the first time in four years of friendship, we didn't talk for a week. That was probably the longest week of my life.
We started talking again, after my new boyfriend started being flat-out rude. It eventually got to where we were back to being friends like we were before. Then he popped a question that would change the rest of our friendship. He asked if I would go to the Military Ball. I said yes. That's when we started talking about getting together.
When he invited me to come over, I was so nervous that a small part of me hoped my parents would say no. Instead, they let me go. I spent that night and most of the next day before I went over, figuring out what to wear and worrying about every little thing. Figuring out what to wear, how to have my hair, and every minor detail in between. Finally the time came for me to come over. I texted Rob to tell him I was on my way. The last thing he told me was, "don't worry, my family is kind of crazy, but the will like you".
They day went pretty good. We made shish kabobs and steaks and just had fun together. His older brother cracked jokes, which he hasn't stopped doing since I met him. His mom was pretty nice, too. I had a blast. As I was leaving his house that night, he walked me to the door, and as we hugged good-bye, I was silently praying that he would kiss me. He didn't though.
The next day at school, I did something that I was wanting to do for the longest time. I broke up with my rude boyfriend. I told Rob about it during our locker break. His face lit up, with a smile from ear to ear. He asked if that meant I was his. I told him to wait and give me sometime. After that, every chance he got, he would ask if I was his yet, and I always gave him the same answer. Finally, the end of the school day came and he was walking me to my bus. We stopped to talk for a little bit and to hug good bye. That's when he did the thing that I had been waiting for. He leaned his head down and kissed me. Whatever he did in that kiss gave me the butterflies in the pit of my stomach and a big smile from ear to ear. After the kiss we said good bye and went our separate ways. I guess, for him, it didn't click that we had kissed, because he sent me a text message saying "does this mean your mine?". I sent back "what do you think?". So that day, September 29th, 2009. We started our relationship.
The best part of our story isn't how we met or our first kiss. The best part of our story, is the fact that we are still writing it. Whether it is him holding me when I cry at night from a bad dream or him calling me on Skype from the bedroom, when I am in the living room, just to say I love you and make sure I am OK. Rob has been there literally through the worst of times. Even being a big guy, he curled up in a hospital chair and slept there all night when I was in the hospital, after a miscarriage. Even before I lost the baby, he would come in when I was going through my morning sickness and hold my hair for me and bring me water. Rob truly has seen me at my worst and best. The awesome part is, he has loved me through it all. He is my world, my smile, and everything to me. He's been my secret-keeper too. What I love the most about being with him, is that no matter what is going on, there is never a dull moment with us. No, its not drama, like breaking up and getting back together. We are learning more and more about eachother, day by day. We always know how to make the other person laugh or at least smile.
That's why he will always be, my bestest friend, through sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live.

That is my most awesome son, and yes I am crazy, but I am glad that you are my daughter-in-law to be. Welcome to the family and I hope you stay for years and years.
